James Phillips

James Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Management & Leadership at the C. T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, where he has been affiliated since 1980. He served as Department Chairperson from 1999 to 2007 and again from October 2012 to May 2015, and directed the Bauer College's Ph.D. programs.

• Education: Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, University of Akron

His research focuses on leadership and moral decision-making, including perceptions of equity in grievance/legal remedy-seeking behavior, beliefs about punishment, and discriminatory behavior in organizations. Expertise spans human resource selection and performance appraisal, with a particular emphasis on ethical transgressions and organizational justice.

Recent publications explore leader transgressions, trust restoration tactics like apologies, and the moral judgments surrounding leadership misconduct. Studies address how intentional misconduct impacts follower identity and the efficacy of preemptive strategies for ethical dilemmas in organizational settings.
