James P. Sickinger is Professor of Classics and Director of Graduate Studies at Florida State University. He specializes in Greek history, epigraphy, Attic orators, and ancient law. Sickinger earned his PhD from Brown University following undergraduate studies at Trinity College.
His research examines documentary practices in ancient Greece, particularly Athenian public records. He authored Public Records and Archives in Classical Athens and contributed to Brill's New Jacoby through translations and commentaries on epigraphic texts.
Current research analyzes newly discovered ostraka from the Athenian Agora, investigating political history and literacy patterns. Professor Sickinger served as Andrew Mellon Professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (2002-2005), advancing scholarship on material evidence from antiquity.
