James Owen Weatherall

James Owen Weatherall is Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. He is also Department Chair, a member of the Center for Theoretical Behavioral Science, Center for Cosmology, and Jack W. Peltason Center for the Study of Democracy. His research spans philosophy of physics, cosmology, and social epistemology, with notable works on misinformation dynamics and foundational issues in quantum field theory. He co-authored The Misinformation Age (2019) and Void: The Strange Physics of Nothing (2016). He organizes the Southern California Philosophy of Physics Group and edits Philosophy of Science journal. His work explores theoretical equivalence in physics, spacetime structure, and epistemic networks influencing belief formation. Weatherall holds visiting appointments at Stanford, ANU, and Cambridge, and collaborates across disciplines on topics like dark matter modeling and algorithmic randomness in probabilistic laws.
