James Mueller serves as Interim Dean and Professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of North Texas (UNT). He holds a Doctor of Journalism from the University of Texas, and Master of Journalism and Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Prior to academia, he worked for a decade as a reporter, editor, and photographer in suburban St. Louis newspapers. His teaching spans media courses, media history, and public relations, including a semester teaching at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique as part of UNT’s graduate program.
His research focuses on media history, journalism ethics, and the intersection of media and politics. Notable works include Shooting Arrows and Slinging Mud: Custer, the Press, and the Little Bighorn and scholarly articles in Mass Comm Review, Journal of Media Economics, and Grassroots Editor. He contributed to The Media in America textbook and chapters in Media Management Review and Custer and His Times.
Mueller received the 2014 High Plains Bookfest and Western Writers of America finalist awards for his book, and the 2008 Symposium Award of Excellence for a paper on the 1876 presidential election’s media coverage.
