Professor James Miller serves as the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), appointed in November 2022. He is the first nurse to hold this position in Scotland, bringing extensive leadership experience in healthcare and academia. His roles include Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University (2015–2022) and Chief Executive of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, an MBA from Edinburgh Napier University, and is an alumnus of Harvard University’s Institute of Education Management.

Research interests focus on healthcare management, clinical leadership, and education policy. - Founder of British Council’s Digital Advisory Board
Led strategic initiatives at UWS, including campus development and international partnerships. Currently chairs Universities Scotland’s International Committee and serves on boards of The Carnegie Trust and UCAS.
