James M. Backes is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and serves as Associate Dean for Clinical and Medical Center Affairs. He is also Assistant Director of the Atherosclerosis and LDL-Apheresis Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he leads clinical trials and patient care.

Dr. Backes’s research centers on the safety and efficacy of lipid-altering therapies, with a focus on clinical lipidology, statin intolerance, and pharmacotherapy optimization. His work explores the use of statins, fibrates, niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, and natural products like policosanol and red yeast rice in managing dyslipidemia. He investigates both traditional and novel dosing strategies, including intermittent statin regimens and adjunctive therapies to reduce adverse effects such as niacin-induced flushing.
His clinical research is conducted within the Atherosclerosis and LDL-Apheresis Center (ALAC), where he serves as a preceptor and principal investigator on multiple trials. His work contributes to evidence-based strategies for cardiovascular risk reduction, particularly in patients with complex lipid disorders or prior intolerance to standard therapies.
