James J. Mingus

Major General James J. Mingus is an Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, affiliated with the College of Arts, Social Sciences, & Humanities. His career spans decades of military service and academic instruction.

• Commissioned in the Field Artillery Branch (1985) from Winona State University.
• Transitioned to Infantry (1987), holding leadership roles in Germany (1988-1991) and as a rifle company commander in 2-505 PIR.
• ROTC Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (1997-1999).
• Commanded the 4th Ranger Training Battalion (2005-2007), Regimental Special Troops Battalion (2007-2009), and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division (2010).
• Deployed 12 times to support Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom (2001-2012).
• Currently serves as Director, Mission Command Center of Excellence.

His academic contributions focus on military leadership, strategic operations, and ROTC program development. Awards include the 2023-2024 Military Friendly Badge. He is married to Amy Hedgepeth and has three children.
