James J. Beatty

James J. Beatty is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (CCAPP). He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago (1986) and has held academic positions at institutions including Pennsylvania State University, Washington University, and Boston University. His research focuses on experimental particle astrophysics, particularly cosmic rays, neutrinos, and astroparticle physics.

Key projects include leadership roles in the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the High Energy Light Isotope Experiment (HELIX), and the Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations (PUEO). He has received prestigious awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship (2001–2002), U.S. Antarctic Service Medal (2006), and Fellowships from the American Physical Society (2012) and AAAS (2017).

His research interests span neutrino detection technology, cosmic ray composition studies, and multi-messenger astrophysics. Recent work includes analyzing IceCube data for neutrino oscillations, cosmic ray anisotropies, and transient astrophysical events. Ongoing efforts involve developing airborne detectors (PUEO) and improving radio array techniques for ultra-high-energy neutrinos.
