James Hendler is the Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor of Computer, Web, and Cognitive Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and Director of RPI's Future of Computing Institute. He also leads the RPI-IBM Artificial Intelligence Research Collaboration. His roles include Director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA) and Open Data Advisor to New York State. He has served on high-profile boards such as Science magazine's Board of Reviewing Editors and the ACM's Technology Policy Council.
Research interests span AI, machine learning, semantic web technologies, data policy, and open government data. Notably, he co-founded the Semantic Web and contributed to the US data.gov initiative. He holds affiliations with RPI's Cognitive Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Lally School of Management, and Tetherless World Constellation departments.
Awarded the US Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal (2002), he is a multidisciplinary Fellow in multiple institutions (US National Academy of Public Administration, AAAI, AAAS, ACM, BCS, IEEE). His career includes roles at DARPA and advisory positions in US Homeland Security and National Academies.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Future of Computing Institute and collaborates with IBM on AI research. Past roles include directing the National Security Directorate's advisory committee at PNNL.
