About
James Henderson is a Professor and Director of the BioInspired Institute at Syracuse University. His research focuses on mechanobiology, biomechanics, and advanced materials like shape-memory polymers, with applications in tissue engineering and biomedical devices. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University (2004), an M.S. from Stanford (2001), and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University (1999, Summa Cum Laude).
His lab integrates cell biomechanics, molecular biology, and computational tools to develop functional materials for studying and controlling mechanobiological processes. Notable honors include the 2024 Mentor of the Year Award and the 2012 DARPA Young Faculty Award. His work has also contributed to numerous student recognitions in bioengineering and materials science.
Key research themes include designing cytocompatible shape-memory polymers for cell scaffolds, enzyme-triggered material responses, and dynamic cell-substrate interactions. His publications span journals such as Advanced Materials Technologies, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, and Biomaterials.
