James Hanley

James Hanley is a Professor of History at The University of Winnipeg, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and the Department of History. His research focuses on Victorian medicine, public health policy, and the British welfare state. He teaches courses such as History of Science, History of Modern Medicine, and British Welfare State studies.

His research explores 19th-century British medical and social policies, including parliamentary petitions, nuisance laws, and the role of statistics in social reform. He has also contributed to Canadian medical history through special issues on tuberculosis. Hanley is associated with the H. Sanford Riley Centre for Canadian History and participates in interdisciplinary initiatives like the State Socialism Workshop.
