About
James Graham is an Honorary Reader in the Division of Informatics, Imaging & Data Sciences at The University of Manchester. His research focuses on Medical Image Analysis, Biomedical Image Computing, and Computer Vision, with applications in disease diagnosis such as osteoporosis detection via dental radiographs and diabetic neuropathy assessment through corneal nerve imaging. He holds a PhD in X-ray crystallography (University of Cambridge, 1978) and a BSc from the University of Edinburgh (1974).
Collaborations include work with Prof Rayaz Malik (School of Biomedicine) on corneal nerve metrics for diabetic neuropathy and Prof Hugh Devlin (School of Dentistry) on dental radiography-based osteoporosis detection. Key contributions include the OSTEODENT study, which explores osteoporosis prediction using dental imaging, and the ADEPT study evaluating AI software in dental caries detection. He has developed tools like IQWorks for MRI quality assurance and AssistDent for automated diagnostic support.
His work impacts UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation. He teaches on the MSc in Medical Imaging program, leading the Introductory Maths and Physics course-unit. Over 100 research outputs span medical imaging algorithms, software development, and clinical validation across dentistry, ophthalmology, and orthopedics.
