- M.A. in International and Public Affairs, Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, 1985
- B.A., Columbia College, Columbia University, 1983
Gelvin's research examines the intersection of nationalism, social movements, and cultural transformations in the Middle East. He has made significant contributions to understanding Arab nationalism, political Islam, and the historical roots of contemporary conflicts. His work often challenges conventional narratives about Middle Eastern history, offering nuanced perspectives on topics like the Sykes-Picot agreement, the Arab uprisings, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Gelvin's scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary political concerns, making his work particularly relevant for understanding current events in the region.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on how local actors and social forces shape historical developments in the Middle East, rather than viewing the region as merely a passive recipient of external influences. Gelvin's work spans from Ottoman-era social history to contemporary political analysis, demonstrating both chronological breadth and thematic depth in his examination of Middle Eastern societies.
