James Fujimoto

James Fujimoto is the Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT, with adjunct appointments in Ophthalmology at Tufts University and the Medical University of Vienna. His pioneering research in biomedical imaging led to the invention of optical coherence tomography (OCT), now a standard clinical tool in ophthalmology with tens of millions of procedures performed annually worldwide.

Professor Fujimoto's current research focuses on advancing OCT technology for applications in ophthalmology, endoscopy, cancer detection, surgical guidance, and developmental biology. His work encompasses high-speed imaging, functional Doppler flow, angiography, and polarization-sensitive methods.

His extensive honors include the Discover Magazine Award, Rank Prize, Zeiss Research Award, Champalimaud Vision Award, IEEE Medal for Healthcare Technology, and Lasker Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
