James Fowler

Dr James Fowler is a Lecturer and MBA Director at the University of Essex Business School. He holds a PhD from the University of York and qualifications including an MSc in Educational Practice and Innovation from Southampton, and a PGCE in Further Education. His research focuses on business and management history, particularly the organizational history of London’s transport systems. He has published extensively in journals like Business History and Transport History, with three major books analyzing London Transport’s strategic evolution and hybrid organizational structures.

Teaching responsibilities include Strategic Management in Health & Social Care, MBA Director workshops, and business planning courses. Professional activities include consultancy with C2C Rail and roles in the Innovate to Elevate Programme.

Key grants/funding include an Innovate to Elevate project (2024) developing business strategies for Construction Training Services. His work bridges historical institutional analysis with contemporary organizational challenges, emphasizing the enduring relevance of past strategies to modern governance issues.
