James F. Sullivan (1943-2015) was a Professor of Physics at the University of Cincinnati's College of Arts and Sciences, serving from 2010 until his retirement in 2015. He had a 42-year career in Physics education, beginning at the College of Applied Science (CAS) in 1968. Sullivan specialized in undergraduate physics pedagogy, emphasizing active engagement in introductory courses. He led the Department of Mathematics and Physics at CAS (2002–2010) and co-founded the Southern Ohio Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (SOS-AAPT) in 1984, organizing numerous regional conferences.
Education: B.S. and M.S. in Physics from Xavier University. Sullivan was honored as a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Science (2000) and received the John B. Hart Award for Professional Service (2001). Beyond academia, he was an amateur pilot, ham radio operator, and avid world cruiser.
He contributed to UC/AAUP negotiations as Chief Negotiator (1990s) and played a key role in merging CAS with the College of Engineering in 2010. His legacy includes shaping physics education practices and fostering community through SOS-AAPT.
