James Ehlers is an Assistant Professor of Art at Baylor University's Department of Art and Art History (College of Arts & Sciences), specializing in Drawing and 2D Design. He joined Baylor in 2024 after 16 years at Emporia State University, where he held roles including Professor of Engraving Arts, Art Department Chair, and Interim Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Education: MFA (University of Florida), MA (Bradley University), BA (McNeese State University). Certified FEGA Master Engraver since 2007.
Research interests focus on contemporary reinterpretations of vanitas themes, exploring mortality, material attachment, and modern symbolism through emojis as visual language. His work critiques temporal emotional states and digital-age disconnection.
Active in global art communities, he has conducted engraving workshops in locations including South Dakota, Scotland, England, and universities nationwide. Exhibited in Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Romania, Macedonia, Turkey, and across the U.S.
