James Dorling

Dr. James Dorling is a Lecturer in Human Nutrition within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing at the University of Glasgow. He joined the institution in 2021 after completing his PhD at Loughborough University and a postdoctoral position at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. His academic journey includes a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Bath (2013) and doctoral research on exercise, obesity genetics, and appetite regulation.

Dr. Dorling's research spans three interconnected domains: (1) nutrition and physical activity interventions targeting obesity and aging biomarkers; (2) physiological regulators of appetite and eating behaviors; and (3) behavioral adaptations to health interventions. His work frequently employs randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and advanced statistical modeling to investigate energy balance mechanisms. Key methodological approaches include metabolic phenotyping, appetite hormone assays, and digital dietary assessment tools.

Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2022-2025) reveals consistent focus on appetite regulation during energy restriction, exercise-dose responses in obesity management, and personalized nutrition approaches. His collaborative work with the CALERIE™ and PROPEL research teams demonstrates expertise in longitudinal metabolic studies, while recent grants highlight emerging work on proteomics and gut health in aging populations.

Dr. Dorling currently supervises Sultan Alenezi on gastrointestinal hormone research during energy restriction. His active grant portfolio includes projects funded by Tenovus Scotland (2025-2026), The Carnegie Trust (2024-2025), BBSRC (2024-2025), and endocrinology societies (2023-2024), all investigating exercise-nutrition interactions in obesity contexts.
