James Conder

James Conder is a Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is affiliated with the Multihazard Mitigation Team and holds a Ph.D. (2001) and Sc.M. (1998) from Brown University, along with a B.S. (1994) from the University of Utah.

His research focuses on mantle flow and melt generation at mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones, integrating geodynamic models with seismic observations. A secondary interest involves neotectonics, particularly active Earth surface deformation through microseismicity analysis, as seen in his work with Karen Godfrey on hydrothermal sites in the Lau Basin.

Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding mantle dynamics across diverse tectonic settings, including seismic tomography of the Tonga arc, shear wave splitting in the Mariana subduction system, and asthenospheric flow asymmetry at the East Pacific Rise. These studies employ geodynamic modeling and seismic imaging to unravel complex mantle processes.

Conder teaches courses in natural hazards, solid-earth geophysics, tectonics, numerical methods, and earthquake seismology. His office is located in Parkinson Lab 101C.
