Dr. James Colwill is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing at Loughborough University. With a BSc (Hons) in Innovation and Design Management from the Open University, he combines over 20 years of industry experience in technology-based design consulting across sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, and heavy engineering with academic leadership. His roles have included head of Design and Innovation at Pira International, where he advised multinational firms, and founder of international startups like James Ross Consulting Ltd.
His research focuses on sustainable manufacturing systems, circular economy frameworks, and resilience in industrial supply chains. He has pioneered methodologies for measuring ecological impact in manufacturing and developed tools to address critical materials scarcity and food waste management. Recent work emphasizes applying sustainability principles to emerging technologies like additive manufacturing and biopolymers.
