James Clift

James Clift is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Sociology at Rhode Island College. He combines his academic role with a 30+ year career at the Providence Police Department, where he has served in diverse capacities including uniform patrol, domestic violence investigation, and forensic examination. He also serves as a lead instructor for the RI State Crime Lab course in Scientific Evidence.

Education:

• B.A. in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Rhode Island College
• M.S. from Salve Regina University

His research and professional work spans criminology, forensic sociology, and community policing strategies, with a focus on applying sociological principles to law enforcement practices. His interdisciplinary expertise bridges criminal justice systems and social services.

Clift has testified in multiple court levels (Federal, Superior, District, Municipal) in Rhode Island and presented workshops on crime scene documentation at regional and international conferences. He is affiliated with several scientific organizations.
