About
Professor James Bull is a faculty member in the Department of Biosciences at Swansea University, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a Professorial role and is actively involved in postgraduate research supervision and coordinating statistics support for Biosciences students. His expertise spans ecological statistics, marine mammal dynamics, metapopulation theory, pest control strategies, and seagrass ecosystem research.
Education: PhD in Population Genetics (Imperial College London, 2001), Diploma in Statistics (Open University, 2009), BA Biological Sciences (University of Oxford, 1997).
Research focuses on spatial connectivity in population dynamics, disease ecology, and applied conservation challenges such as agri-environmental sustainability and marine management. Key methods include mathematical modeling, field observations, and ecological experiments. Current projects include seagrass restoration in Wales, grey seal phenology studies, and mosquito control using plant-derived repellents.
Recent work highlights the use of habitat suitability models for marine ecosystems, the impact of climate change on species distributions, and the development of biological control agents for pests. He collaborates on interdisciplinary grants such as SEACAMS2 (£17M EU funding) and BLUEFISH (£5M EU INTERREG).
Supervision and grants: Active in mentoring over 10 PhD/MRes students across topics like seagrass restoration, pollinator dynamics, and marine predator spatial ecology. Leads research projects funded by NERC, BBSRC, and DEFRA.
Labs/teams: Involved in initiatives like the Isles of Scilly Seagrass Monitoring Program and collaborates with organizations such as Natural Resources Wales and the Zoological Society of London.
