James Brien

James Brien is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is also affiliated with the Markey Cancer Center and the Translational Oncology Research Program.

Dr. Brien’s research focuses on immunology and virology, particularly viral diseases such as West Nile Virus, Dengue Virus, Zika Virus, and SARS-CoV-2. His work explores cytotoxic T-cell responses, vaccine development, and immune modulation in the context of flaviviruses and other pathogens.

Recent publications highlight his contributions to mRNA vaccine technology for tick-borne and respiratory viruses, including studies on immunogenicity, epitope mapping, and biophysical protein-membrane interactions. Current projects involve collaborations with institutions like Washington University in St. Louis, Merck Sharp & Dohme Corporation, and Universidad de Puerto Rico.
