James Boldin is a Professor of Music at the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) and holds the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Endowed Chair in Music. He served as Interim Director (2022-2023) and Associate Director (2016-2022) of ULM's School of Visual and Performing Arts. An active performer, he holds principal horn positions with the Shreveport Symphony, Rapides Symphony, and Monroe Symphony Orchestras, and is a member of faculty ensembles Black Bayou Brass and Trio Mélange.
Boldin's research focuses on horn performance, chamber music, pedagogy, and contemporary music commissioning. He has premiered numerous compositions for solo horn, brass trio, and quintet, and maintains a robust recording career, including albums like Jan Koetsier: Music for Horn and Cantabile: Music by Gina Gillie (MSR Classics).
Awards include Career Advancement Grants from the Louisiana Division of the Arts (2012, 2015) and recognition as a Yamaha Performing Artist. He serves as Publications Editor for the International Horn Society and has authored pedagogical books central to horn training.
