James Baleja

James Baleja is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Education at Tufts University School of Medicine. His research focuses on metabolomics and protein structure analysis using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, with emphasis on biomarker discovery for diseases like heart failure. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard in protein dynamics.

Dr. Baleja directs the Biochemistry Curriculum and teaches courses including 'Molecules to Cells' in the Medical School's Scientific Foundations of Medicine program. He co-leads biochemistry courses in the MS in Biomedical Sciences program and teaches dental and PhD students. His professional activities include roles with the Association of Biochemistry Educators and editorial boards of journals like the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

His research has been funded by NIH and NSF grants, focusing on topics like peptide stapling, metabolic profiling in heart failure, and drug delivery systems. Key achievements include developing epidermal metabolite profiling methods and creating xenograft models for SDH-deficient tumors.
