Jamal ASSAAD

Jamal ASSAAD is a Professor at the University of Valenciennes, conducting research at the Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics and Nanotechnology (IEMN, UMR CNRS n° 8520) within the OAE Department. He served as Director of the OAE Department from 2010-2014 and previously directed the IUP GEII from 1998-2003. His research spans multiple domains including ultrasonic transducers, structural health monitoring, and signal processing for transportation safety applications.

ASSAAD's research interests focus on three main areas: high-frequency antennas used in acoustics, integrated health check systems, and anti-collision radars using Ultra Wideband (UWB) techniques. His work on acoustic antennas has developed comprehensive modeling tools for high-frequency ultrasonic transducers using finite element methods. In structural health monitoring, he has made significant contributions to Lamb wave modeling and signal processing techniques for damage detection. His anti-collision radar research includes work on correlation radar systems and 1-bit correlation receivers for transportation applications.

His publication record shows a clear progression toward passive structural health monitoring systems that utilize ambient noise rather than active excitation. The research demonstrates increasing sophistication in modeling Lamb wave propagation and interaction with structural defects, with applications primarily in aerospace materials. His work connects fundamental ultrasonic theory with practical engineering applications in transportation safety.

ASSAAD has supervised 15 PhD theses (including 5 between 2005-2010) and 2 HDRs, with an average of 2 international journal publications per PhD student. He has secured significant research funding including 3 BRITE-EURAM European contracts (approximately 500k€), DGA/RADOME Prestation for Université du Havre (approximately 30k€), a contract with ONERA on CSI (56k€), and two contracts with JINOV (100k€). He has also collaborated with multiple international institutions including universities in Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Lebanon.

He leads the TRUST team (Ultrasonic Transducers: Safety in Transport) within the OAE Department of IEMN, which is part of a larger structure consisting of four research groups: TPIA, MAMINA, COMNUMC, and CSAOO. His research activities span both the TPIA and COMNUM groups. He is also involved with CISIT (Campus interdisciplinaire de recherche, d'innovation technologique et de formation à vocation Internationale centré sur la Sécurité et l'Intermodalité des Transports de surface), focusing on transportation safety and intermodality.
