Jakub Čechvala Ph.D. is a researcher at the Department of Ancient Culture and its Reception within the Cabinet for Classical Studies at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since 2013, he has served as the executive editor of Eirene. Studia Graeca et Latina, a prominent journal in classical studies. He also teaches courses on ancient theater at the Department of Theater Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, where he has offered specialized seminars including 'Greek Tragedy,' 'Origins of Tragedy,' and 'How to Read Greek Tragedy' since 2012.
Čechvala earned his Master's degree in Hussite Theology-Religious Studies from Charles University in 2005, followed by studies in Classical Greek from 2000-2002. He completed his Ph.D. in Classical Philology at the Institute of Classical Philology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University between 2005-2013, with a dissertation titled 'Dramatic Appropriation of Myth: Tradition, Manipulation, Interpretation' under the supervision of Dr. Sylva Fischerová. He also undertook research stays at the University of Crete in 2007 and 2010-2011 under the supervision of Professors Nikolaidis and Kavoulaki, respectively, supported by Greek state scholarships.
His research primarily focuses on Greek tragedy (particularly Euripides), the archaeology of Greek theaters, and interpretive approaches to classical texts. A significant portion of his work examines the Czech reception of Greek tragedy across different historical periods, including how classical studies were conducted during the Cold War era. His scholarship demonstrates a strong interest in fragmentary texts of ancient tragedians, textual criticism, and the theoretical frameworks for understanding mythological reception in modern contexts.
Čechvala's publication record shows a consistent output since 2008, with a notable increase in scholarly books and edited volumes from 2016 onward. His work spans monographs, edited collections, journal articles, and book chapters that collectively examine how ancient Greek drama has been interpreted, adapted, and reimagined within Czech cultural contexts. Recent publications increasingly focus on the theoretical aspects of reception studies while maintaining his foundational interest in textual analysis of Greek tragedy.
As executive editor of Eirene. Studia Graeca et Latina since 2013, Čechvala has played a significant role in shaping the discourse of classical studies in the Czech Republic. He has also received research funding, including as principal investigator for a Specific Research project at Charles University (2006-2007) on intertextual readings of Greek mythology and tragedy, and collaborated on multimedia Greek language course development (2004). His international scholarly engagement includes conference presentations in Moscow, Prague, and other venues, reflecting his standing within the broader European classical studies community.
