His research focuses on virology, specializing in virus evolution, animal models for infectious diseases, and development of antiviral therapies and vaccines. He studies diverse virus families including herpesviruses, coronaviruses, and influenza viruses, with particular emphasis on Marek’s Disease Virus as a model for virulence evolution.
Current projects include creating hypermutator herpesviruses to investigate adaptation mechanisms and establishing hamster models for SARS-CoV-2 research. He leads efforts in developing live-attenuated vaccines and novel antiviral strategies since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
His group explores viral immune evasion, drug resistance development, and cross-species adaptation using molecular virology approaches.
