Jakob Isak Nielsen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Journalism Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark. His academic work focuses on contemporary television, particularly the global appeal of Danish TV drama and the evolution of serial storytelling in the streaming era. He is actively involved in major research initiatives that examine media competitiveness and transnational content flows.
His research interests include media studies, television seriality, transnational media cultures, streaming platforms, and the internationalization of small-market television. He explores how digital transformation and global distribution models affect narrative structures, audience engagement, and industrial practices in European media.
Jakob co-edited the books Fjernsyn for viderekomne (2011) and Streaming for viderekomne (2020), contributing significantly to scholarly discourse on advanced television consumption and production. His project What Makes Danish TV Drama Series Travel? (2014–2018), funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, analyzed the export success of Danish drama, while his current role as team leader in the Horizon-RIA project CresCine (2023–2026) focuses on enhancing the international competitiveness of the European film industry in small markets.
He is a key contributor to understanding sustainable innovation in media through digital and physical applications, with a focus on circular product and service design in cultural industries.
