Dr. Alvarez-Rosales specializes in colonial Latin American literature, with a focus on Afro-Hispanic, Afro-Andean, and Equatorial Guinean narratives. Her research explores discourses on nation-building, race, and identities, particularly through ethnic relations in colonial historiography and subversive discourses challenging colonial power structures. She analyzes legal and literary texts to examine construction of the colonial subject and “other” in Andean and Afro-Hispanic contexts.
Her publications examine colonial and postcolonial representations of Afro-descendant populations in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Equatorial Guinea. Key themes include foundational myths, racial identity in colonial texts, and legal-historical narratives of Afro-Andean communities.
