Dr. Jacob Johanssen is an Associate Professor in Communications at St. Mary’s University, London, and Subject Lead (Research) for the School of Business and Communication. He holds a PhD from the University of East London and previously served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and the University of East London. His research bridges psychoanalysis and media studies, focusing on digital media’s impact on subjectivity, online misogyny, and datafication. He has authored seven books including *Fantasy, Online Misogyny and the Manosphere* (2021) and co-edited *Media and Psychoanalysis: A Critical Introduction* (2022). His work has been recognized with the 2021 Lotte Köhler Prize.
Education: BA (University of Salzburg), MA (Goldsmiths, University of London), PhD (University of East London). He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds leadership roles in the British Psychoanalytic Council and the Association for Psychosocial Studies.
Research interests include psychoanalytic media studies, digital culture, and critical theory. He currently supervises six PhD students exploring topics like meaningful work in academia, self-objectification in cinema, and posthumanism in film. His grants include EPSRC funding for the *AI-COSA* project on workplace safety apps during the pandemic.
Awards: 2021 Lotte Köhler Prize; BPC Founding Scholar; featured in Brett Kahr’s Top 10 Psychotherapy Books (2018).
Teaching: Course Lead for BSc Marketing and Communication and BA Sports Communications programs. Teaches communication theory, data analytics, and global media studies.
