Jacob Hollenberg is a Professor and Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet, leading the Center for Cardiac Arrest Research at the Department of Clinical Research and Education, Södersjukhuset. He serves as the Convener of both the Steering Group and Scientific Executive Committee of the Cardiac Arrest Center and is the scientific chairman of the Swedish CPR Council.
His primary research interests focus on improving survival rates from cardiac arrest through innovative interventions. He has pioneered research in simplified CPR techniques, SMS alerting systems for lifeguards, simultaneous emergency response systems (SAMS), drone-delivered defibrillators, therapeutic hypothermia, and advanced cardiac arrest treatments including ECMO. His work spans the entire care chain from the community to hospital intensive care.
Hollenberg's research has significantly influenced international treatment guidelines, with major publications in prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Circulation, and European Heart Journal. His SMS lifeguard system, which alerts volunteer rescuers to cardiac arrest locations via mobile app, has been implemented across Sweden and Denmark and earned him KI's Innovation Prize in 2024.
