Jacob Haubenreich

Jacob Haubenreich is an Assistant Professor of German at Johns Hopkins University (on leave during the 2024-2025 academic year). Previously, he was an Associate Professor of German at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He holds a PhD in German from the University of California, Berkeley (2013).

Research Interests:

Haubenreich’s work focuses on materiality and meaning in literary production, spanning 19th–21st century German literature with a theoretical lens. His research integrates posthermeneutic approaches, textual criticism (critique génétique, book history), and archival analysis. Key themes include mediality, visuality, and the interplay between material and semiotic dimensions of literature.

Publications & Projects:

His forthcoming book Textual Entanglements (Cornell UP, 2025) examines material production processes in works by Rilke, Handke, and Bernhard. A second project, Weird Books, explores contemporary works challenging boundaries between literature and visual art. Both projects emphasize the evolving materiality of the book in the digital age.
