Jacob George

Professor Jacob George (MBBS, FRACP, PhD, FAASLD) serves as the Robert W Storr Chair of Hepatic Medicine at the Sydney Medical School, while also directing the Storr Liver Centre at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. He leads the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Westmead Hospital and Sydney West Local Health District. His research spans liver disease pathogenesis and liver cancer epidemiology, with particular emphasis on viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MAFLD), and host genetics in treatment responses. His work identifying interferon lambda 3 gene polymorphisms as predictors for hepatitis C treatment marked major advances in personalized medicine.

Recent research focuses on non-invasive fibrosis diagnostics and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prevention, supported by grants from the Cancer Council NSW and Cancer Institute NSW. His 2025 publications highlight machine learning applications in MASH detection, PM2.5-induced liver damage, and international consensus on liver disease management.
