Jack Risley is a Professor at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. He teaches in the Studio Art programs, overseeing BFA and MFA degree tracks. His work focuses on transforming everyday objects into large-scale sculptures that explore spatial anomalies and human-environment interactions.
Risley earned a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale School of Art. He has held academic positions at institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, Virginia Commonwealth University, and New York University.
His research interests include sculpture, installation art, and the reinterpretation of ordinary objects. Major exhibitions include solo shows at Postmasters Gallery (New York, 2024) and group exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA PS1, and Vienna Secession. Key awards include the Rome Prize Fellowship (1998-99) and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (1999).
Risley's career spans over 25 years of teaching and artistic practice. His work is represented by Postmasters Gallery, and he has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Current office: Weil 105.
