About
Dr Jack Button is a faculty member in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge, specializing in Combinatorial and Geometric Group Theory, with a focus on fundamental groups of 3-manifolds and related groups. He is affiliated with the Differential Geometry & Topology Research Group.
His research explores the interplay between group theory and geometric structures, including nonpositive curvature, 3-manifolds, and linear groups. Recent work includes studies on hierarchically hyperbolic groups and nonhyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups. A common thread in his publications is the application of geometric and topological methods to understand group properties.
Selected publications highlight his contributions to generalized Baumslag–Solitar groups, tubular groups, and Helfgott-type growth in linear groups. These works span topics in geometric topology, algebraic structures, and non-Euclidean geometry.
