His academic trajectory includes Endowed Chair at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2001-2007), UD/UHD position at University of Twente (1995-2007), and Senior Research Fellow at Copenhagen Peace Research Institute (1993-1995).
His research specializes in IR Theory, Security Studies, Geopolitics, Multilevel Governance, and Energy Security, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to peace and justice. De Wilde has supervised 18 graduate students and co-organized the Groningen Energy Summer School 2016 on 'Energy Transition, Geopolitics & Urban Security'. He provides frequent expert commentary for Dutch media on Ukraine war implications and defense policy evaluation.
As core faculty in CIRR, he contributes to interdisciplinary research on evolving global governance structures and non-traditional security threats through institutional collaboration and public intellectual engagement.
