JOHN R. COX

John R. Cox is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Education at Cumberland University, part of The Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. He also serves as an Account Executive with Energy Systems Group (ESG). Prior to his current roles, he spent 30 years in K-12 education, culminating as Superintendent of the Warren County School District (TN) from 2012–2020. He has held leadership roles in education policy, including service on state and national committees such as the Tennessee State Board of Education BEP Review Committee and the Tennessee Department of Education Equity Playbook Development Team.

• Education: B.S. (Middle Tennessee State University), M.A. and Ed.S. (Tennessee Technological University)
• Key Roles: Former County Commissioner (Warren County, TN), Co-founder of Citizens of Progress Scholarship Program, and Mentor to new Superintendents via Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS)

His research and professional focus centers on educational leadership, equitable resource allocation, and policy implementation in K-12 systems. He has pioneered digital learning initiatives through the Tennessee Digital Learning Library and contributed to statewide educational assessment frameworks.

• Awards: Notable recognitions include the 2017 Upper Cumberland Superintendent of the Year and 2012 Tennessee State Supervisor of the Year Award

Post-retirement, he has focused on institutional partnerships through roles like Executive in Residence at the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), fostering collaboration across Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Iowa.
