J.R. Cruz

J.R. Cruz is a Professor and Tilley Chair in Electrical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, serving as Director of the Communications Signal Processing Laboratory (CSPLab). He holds dual roles as an academic and researcher with affiliations in the Gallogly College of Engineering. His career includes engineering roles at NASA and Motorola before joining OU in 1982.

Education:

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering, University of Porto (1974)
• M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, University of Houston (1977, 1980)

Research focuses on signal processing, coding for wireless communications, and data storage systems. Key areas include applications of coding theory to digital recording systems and interdisciplinary work in molecular biology through recent publications on rodent phylogenetics and species delimitation.

Awards include the IEEE Fellow designation (2018), 1995 Outstanding Service Award, and Stuart Meyer Memorial Award. He has contributed to IEEE Transactions as Editor and Editor-in-Chief, and co-authored the 2007 IEEE International Conference on Communications Best Paper Award-winning work.
