J. Tracy Power is the Director of Newberry College Archives and an Associate Professor of History at Newberry College. He holds a Ph.D. (1993), M.A. (1984) from the University of South Carolina, and a B.A. (1980) from Emory University. His research focuses on Civil War history, South Carolina history, and historical preservation. He previously served at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History from 1986-2013, coordinating National Register programs and historical markers.
Power has authored award-winning works, including Lee’s Miserables (1998), which received multiple accolades, and co-edited The Leverett Letters (2000). He has contributed to the South Carolina Encyclopedia and produced essays for educational and journalistic platforms. His honors include the Alexander S. Salley Award, Program Innovation Award (2019), and Professor of the Year (2020). He serves on the Old Exchange Building Commission and has been recognized for establishing Newberry’s Archives.
He has taught at the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College, and his work bridges academic history with public engagement. Beyond academia, Power is involved in historical associations and has been honored for loyalty to Newberry College.
