J. David Rogers is the Karl F. Hasselmann Professor of Geological Engineering and Associate Department Chair of the Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering department at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He earned his B.S. in Earth Science (Geology Option) from California State Polytechnic University (1976), and M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Geological Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley (1979, 1982). Before academia, he served as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer (1984–1996) and held engineering roles in private consulting firms.
- B.S. in Earth Science: Geology Option, California State Polytechnic University (1976)
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (1979)
- Ph.D. in Geological and Geotechnical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (1982)
Rogers specializes in geological engineering, with a focus on landslide hazard evaluation, geotechnical construction, seismology, and flood protection systems. His work integrates GIS, LiDAR, and geophysical methods like electrical resistivity tomography to assess geohazards globally, including in China, Pakistan, and the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
Hazards mapping and historical analysis dominate his recent publications, such as The Alcan Pioneer Road and Discovery of Permafrost (2024) and studies on post-fire debris flows in Montecito, California (2023). Collaborative projects span earthquake risk in Missouri, rockslide dam breaching mechanisms in Diexi, China, and landslide susceptibility in Arkansas and Ethiopia.
Scientific Awards
- Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award (2023)
- Schuster Medal (2022)
- Recipient of 16 military decorations and NAO wings
Rogers’ research has secured grants from the U.S. Geological Survey, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the University of Missouri Research Board. He also teaches courses on geological engineering, including Principles of Geological Engineering and Geological Engineering Senior Design at Missouri S&T.
