Professor J. Craig Phillips is a faculty member at the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. He holds degrees including a PhD in Nursing from Florida International University and an LL.M in Intercultural Human Rights Law from St. Thomas University. His primary research focuses on the ecosocial context of health as a human right, particularly among marginalized populations such as those living with HIV in Botswana, Canada, Nigeria, and the United States. He co-led the development of the Ottawa Model for Curriculum Development, emphasizing community engagement in nursing education. Phillips is also co-director of the International Nursing Network for HIV Research and an investigator at the Centre for Research on Health and Nursing, a partnership with the Canadian Nurses Association. He has been recognized with FAAN (2015) and FCAN (2021) for contributions to nursing and health policy, especially concerning LGBTQ+ health and HIV advocacy.
His research interests span marginalized populations, sexual minority health, HIV/AIDS care, sustainable development, and health systems. Phillips has secured funding from CIHR, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and others. His publications address topics like maternal syphilis care, Inuit cancer care disparities, and transgender health. He actively engages in global health equity initiatives and curriculum reform, emphasizing human rights and decolonization in healthcare practice.
