About
Professor J. Andy Milton is a Research Professorial Fellow in Analytical Geochemistry at the University of Southampton and Manager of the Ocean and Earth Science ICP-MS Research Facility. He specializes in laser-based isotopic and elemental mapping using advanced mass spectrometry techniques (ICP-MS, TOF-ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS), with a focus on method development and interdisciplinary applications. His research spans geology, geochemistry, archaeology, oceanography, environmental science, and biology.
He leads or collaborates on major research projects such as NERC-funded studies on ice-sheet retreat, marine diagenesis, and Paleolithic art dating. Current PhD students under his supervision include Liam Edgeway (iPhD Biomed) and Guy Wragge Morley (PhD INSPIRE). His work integrates cutting-edge analytical tools to address questions in Earth systems, climate history, and cultural heritage.
- Key Projects: NERC-funded investigations into serpentinization, ocean crust dynamics, and Pleistocene climate transitions
- Labs/Teams: Oversees the Ocean and Earth Science ICP-MS facility, a core resource for geochemical research
- Interdisciplinary Focus: Applies geochemical methods to archaeology, environmental monitoring, and marine biology
