Jörn Rüsen

Jörn Rüsen is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Essen since 2007, following his directorship there (1997–2007). He held professorships at the University of Witten/Herdecke (1996–2009), University of Bielefeld (1989–1997), and earlier at Ruhr-University of Bochum (1974–1989) and Free University of Berlin (1972–1974).

His scholarly work focuses on:

• Theory of history and its cultural implications
• History of historiography and modern intellectual history
• History didactics and historical culture
• Interdisciplinary approaches to intercultural communication and humanism

Awards include:

• 2008 – Order of Merit of the State of Northrhine-Westfalia
• 2010 – Honorary Doctor of the University of Lund
• 2015 – Honorary Doctor of the University of Brasilia
