About
Ivan Senta is a Senior Research Associate at the Ruđer Bošković Institute's Division for Marine and Environmental Research, Laboratory for Analytical Chemistry and Biogeochemistry of Organic Compounds. He holds a PhD (2009) and MSc (2003) in Chemistry from the University of Zagreb.
His research focuses on environmental chemistry, wastewater-based epidemiology, pharmaceutical pollution, and analytical methods for contaminant detection. He investigates biomarkers in wastewater to assess population-scale drug consumption, dietary habits, and exposure to pollutants, with emphasis on macrolide antibiotics and personal care products.
Recent publications highlight his work on wastewater analysis for monitoring psychoactive substances, pharmaceutical degradation mechanisms, and antibiotic resistance gene propagation. He has received prestigious awards including a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2019) and American Chemical Society grant (2016).
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (2019)
- American Chemical Society Pittcon 2016 grant
- Multiple annual high-quality journal awards (2013, 2017–2022)
- Special institute award for scientific presentation (2011)
Senta contributes to method development for multiresidue pharmaceutical analysis and participates in international conferences on wastewater monitoring. His work bridges analytical chemistry, environmental toxicology, and public health surveillance.
