About
Ivan Medvedev is a Professor and Chair of the Physics Department at Wright State University, as well as Interim Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department. He has been at Wright State University since 2010, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor (tenured) in 2015, and to Professor in 2023.
Dr. Medvedev received his PhD in Physics from The Ohio State University in 2005, following Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in 1998 and 1996, respectively. Prior to joining Wright State, he served as a Research Scientist at The Ohio State University Department of Physics from 2005-2010 and as a Visiting Scholar there from 2011-2018.
Dr. Medvedev's research focuses on the bio-medical applications of Terahertz (THz) spectral range, with primary emphasis on THz high resolution molecular ro-vibrational spectroscopy and its analytical applications. He develops sensing systems for novel biomedical applications of the THz spectral range, particularly for spectroscopic diagnostic analysis of exhaled human breath. His work bridges astrophysical spectroscopy with practical biomedical and chemical sensing applications, creating innovative approaches to molecular detection and analysis.
His publications and presentations demonstrate a consistent focus on rotational spectroscopy, with applications spanning from astrophysical observations to biomedical diagnostics. Recent work has increasingly emphasized the practical applications of THz technology for chemical and medical sensing, particularly breath analysis for medical diagnostics.
- Presidential Early Career Achievement Award, WSU, 2014 (awarded to just 1 faculty member annually)
- SOCHE Excellence in Teaching Award, Dayton, OH, 2014
Dr. Medvedev teaches undergraduate courses including Physics 112 (non-calculus based physics), Physics 2400 (calculus based physics for engineers), Physics 2420 (Modern physics), and Physics 4660/6600 (Introduction to Quantum Mechanics). At the graduate level, he teaches Physics 899 (Research) and Physics 799 ("Theoretical And Computational Aspects Of Experimental Molecular Spectroscopy").
His laboratory work focuses on developing advanced THz sensing systems, particularly for breath analysis applications. His research group collaborates with various institutions including MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, and several university departments across the country.
