University of North Carolina at CharlotteAbout
Dr. Ishwar Aggarwal is a Research Professor in the Department of Physics and Optical Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Catholic University of America (1974) with a focus on fiber-optics and optical wave-guides. His career spans over 25 years at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where he pioneered advancements in infrared (IR) optical materials, including IR fibers and transparent ceramic spinel. He transitioned four technologies to industry, generating billions in market impact.
His research focuses on fiber-optics, mid-IR applications, and novel optical devices. Key contributions include developing IR fibers for missile countermeasures, environmental sensors, and biomedical diagnostics, as well as spinel ceramics for defense and aerospace. He has co-authored over 300 papers, edited three books, and holds 70+ patents.
Dr. Aggarwal’s awards highlight his impact: the 2011 David Richardson Medal (OSA), FLC National Technology Transfer Award, and multiple NRL honors. His work with BAE Systems, Raytheon, and ITT has revolutionized defense systems, while MER Corp commercialized spinel ceramics for military and civilian use.
Previously, he led R&D at Corning (fiber optics) and Lasertron Inc. (semiconductor lasers). His current efforts at UNC Charlotte focus on passive/active mid-IR fiber devices, expanding applications in telecom, sensors, and medical technologies.
