Ishani Mukherjee

Ishani Mukherjee is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). She specializes in intercultural communication, digital advocacy, and media representation. Her research explores intersections of culture, religion, AI, and mobility, with a focus on South Asia and Caribbean identities. Dr. Mukherjee is an Honors College Faculty Fellow and serves on the editorial board of the Florida Journal of Communication.

Her research interests include media representation of cultural identity, digital activism, and ethical challenges in digital ethnography. Recent work examines Trinidad’s Phagwa festival through cultural performance theories and analyzes pandemic-era gender-based activism via social media.

Her publications span peer-reviewed journals and edited collections, with a focus on media, migration, and ethics. Awards include the Clifford G. Christians Ethics Research Award and UIC’s Honoring Our Professor’s Excellence Award.

Dr. Mukherjee emphasizes collaborative teaching and student partnerships in both traditional and digital learning environments.
