Isabelle WATTIAU

Isabelle WATTIAU is a Professor of Information Systems and holds the Chair of Information Strategy and Governance at ESSEC Business School. She earned a M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Sorbonne University (1990) and an HDR from the University of Versailles (1997). Her career spans over three decades at ESSEC, including roles as program director for the MS MSIR and chairholder since 2019. Research focuses on information systems design, data quality, security, and conceptual modeling, with over 90 publications in journals like Decision Support Systems and Data & Knowledge Engineering.

Her research interests emphasize database design, data governance, and design science methodologies. Notable contributions include frameworks for data anonymization, conceptual modeling for prosopographic databases, and studies on Big Data governance. She has received awards such as the 2016 Best Paper Award at ICEIS and the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (2015).

Her publications explore topics like IT backsourcing decision-making, NoSQL database engineering, and security requirements methodologies. She serves on editorial boards for journals like Ingenierie des Systemes d'Information and has guest-edited special issues on conceptual modeling. Current work addresses AI risk management and data democratization in organizational contexts.

As a PhD advisor, she directed Kashif Mehmoond’s thesis on information system quality patterns. She actively participates in academic committees, including the Steering Committee for the International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER).
