Irwin Morris is the William T. Kretzer Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Executive Director of the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at NC State University. His research focuses on southern politics, political economy, race relations, public policy, and American political institutions. Morris holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1994), along with an M.A. (1991) and B.A. (1989) from Furman University.
His groundbreaking work includes the award-winning book Movers and Stayers: The Partisan Transformation of Twenty-First Century Southern Politics (Oxford, 2021), which analyzes demographic shifts and partisan realignment. Recent research explores Trump’s rise, antebellum slavery’s modern political impact, and elite discourse on political violence. Morris’s publications span academic journals and books addressing southern distinctiveness, institutional change, and electoral dynamics.
